Current limitation and solar flares

Abstract: A flare model based on force-free currents in the solar atrnosphere is considered. The energy of the flare is supposed to be stored as magnetic energy in the current system, tf the current density exceeds a certain critical limit an over-voltage may arise in the circuit which will give rise to a rapid release of the stored energy. At the end of the paper some results yielded by the model are compared with observational evidence of flares.

“…For a force-free filament of the type shown in Figure 1 and having the length, l, the internal inductance is /x01 Li ~--(2.3) 47r (Carlqvist, 1969;Bostr6m, 1973). If we assume that the filament forms a semicircular loop with a diameter, d = l0 s m, i.e.…”

“…The potential drop, Uo, across the double layer depends both on the current density and on the thickness of the double layer, lo (Langmuir, 1929;Carlqvist, 1969). As long as the thickness of the layer is smaller than the radius of cross-section of the current filament, ro, the potential drop increases steadily with lo.…”

“…Double layers have also been invoked to explain solar flares [2], and the modulation of the Jovian decametric radiation by 10 [22]. Two the ion flux through the double layer must be much smaller than the electron flux, thus establishing the condition that a net current must exist through the double layer.…”
