Current Methodological Considerations in Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis

Abstract: Researchers must make numerous choices when conducting factor analyses, each of which can have significant ramifications on the model results. They must decide on an appropriate sample size to achieve accurate parameter estimates and adequate power, a factor model and estimation method, a method for determining the number of factors and evaluating model fit, and a rotation criterion. Unfortunately, researchers continue to use outdated methods in each of these areas. The present article provides a current overv… Show more

“…We performed Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA, oblique rotation) on intra-and inter-team learning scales based on principal axis factoring (Schmitt 2011) and followed the criteria for item retention from Worthington and Whittaker (2006). Results showed a three-factor solution, in which adaptive intra-team learning, transformative intra-team learning and inter-team learning were distinguished.…”

“…The CFA was conducted because confirmatory procedures offered more rigorous testing than exploratory analyses. As multivariate normality is assumed for most CFA estimation methods, and departures from multivariate normality may have a significant impact on CFA estimations [31], descriptive analytical measures were calculated prior to conducting the CFA. For the OJM, univariate and multivariate kurtosis statistics were found, indicating non-normality; therefore, the CFA was carried out using the asymptotically distribution-free (ADF) method according to the guidelines for non-normal data and large samples [32].…”

“…Nesse sentido, a AFC é um método teórico e/ou empiricamente baseado (Brown, 2006). Em muitos casos, ambas as técnicas, AFE e AFC, podem ser utilizadas de maneira complementar, com vistas a avaliar a plausibilidade de determinada estrutura fatorial (Schmitt, 2011).…”
