Current nomenclatural changes inCordyceps sensu latoand its multidisciplinary impacts

Abstract: Innumerable name changes have occurred in Cordyceps and allied taxa, after the phylogenetic classification of Cordyceps, coupled by the application of one fungus one name after the amendment of ICN. Complying with one fungus one name, many generic names have been protected for monophyletic clades in Clavicipitaceae and Ophiocordycipitaceae that have made tremendous transfer of Cordyceps spp. to both sexual and asexual genera. Species compositions of the accepted genera Ophiocordyceps, Tolypocladium, Metarhiziu… Show more

“…Ophiocordyceps Petch (1931: 73) is the largest genus in Ophiocordycipitaceae (Hypocreales, Ascomycota), comprising more than 200 species (Sung et al 2007, Spatafora et al 2015, Shrestha et al 2017a, Wijayawardene et al 2017. The genus is characterized mainly by darkly pigmented, rough, pliant or wiry stroma that parasitizes larvae and adults of different arthropod orders (Sung et al 2007, Wijayawardene et al 2017.…”

“…They are found in the Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Ascomycota ( Sung et al, 2007a ; Maharachchikumbura et al, 2016 ; Wijayawardene et al, 2018 ). The generic composition of Ophiocordycipitaceae underwent several changes over time ( Sung et al, 2007a ; Quandt et al, 2014 ; Maharachchikumbura et al, 2016 ; Shrestha et al, 2017 ; Wijayawardene et al, 2018 ), and currently ten genera are accepted ( Hyde et al, 2020 ). New combinations of these genera were proposed for Polycephalomyces by Kepler et al (2013) , Tolypocladium by Quandt et al (2014) , Perennicordyceps by Matočec et al (2014) and Drechmeria , Harposporium , Ophiocordyceps , and Purpureocillium by Spatafora et al (2015) .…”
