Current observations from a looking down vertical V-ADCP: interaction with winds and tide? The case of Giglio Island (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy)

Abstract: In the context of the environmental monitoring of the Concordia wreck removal\ud project, measurements of currents, winds and sea level height were made along the eastern coast\ud of the Giglio Island, Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy), during 2012—2013. The aim of the study was to\ud investigate the effect of atmospheric forcing and periodic sea-level changes on the coastal\ud currents. Normalised Cross-Correlation Function analysis allowed us to correlate these observations.\ud A marked inter-seasonal variability was f… Show more

“…2.6 m; Cacabelos et al 2019) is much wider than in the Tyrrhenian Sea (ca. 0.45 m; Cutroneo et al 2017), this observation suggests that tidal amplitude may influence 'plasticrust' spread. Thus, we conclude that 'plasticrust' abundance may depend on the local levels of nearshore plastic debris, wave exposure and tidal amplitude.…”

“…For the shoreline identification, we did not consider sea-level fluctuations related to tides of astronomical origin, because they are highly dependent on the topography of the marine basin (e.g. Ferrarin et al 2013;Cutroneo et al 2017). Indeed, along the steep seabed of the Calabria Tyrrhenian coast the sea-level fluctuations are very low and can be negligible (e.g.…”

“…Even if wind forcing can influence velocity fields, considering the relatively shallow depths of the water column, numerical modeling suggests a major impact for tide on the currents. Then, contrary to the Bilbao (Grifoll et al, 2009) and Genoa ports (Cutroneo et al, 2017), density-driven circulation is considered nonexistent in La Rochelle marina. Indeed, there is no freshwater influence except during occasional heavy rainfall.…”
