Driving an automobile is an important option for community mobility. Functional vision is a major consideration for safe driving, and age-related vision impairment may result in the loss of driving independence. Clinicians and older drivers would benefit from understanding current options for driving with low vision, including state laws, use of adaptive equipment, low-vision rehabilitation, and driver rehabilitation. This article reviews the concept of a bioptic telescopic lens system for driving with low vision, including an example of a collaborative interdisciplinary bioptic driving training program developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in conjunction with clinical experts.

High myopia, defined as refractive error of at least −6.00D or an axial length of 26.5 mm or more, can induce many modifications in eye's anatomy that can lead to complications. When high myopia is able to decrease best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) due to its complications, it is called pathologic myopia. Pathologic myopia is one of the major causes of blindness, and it represents a serious issue, since incidence of myopia and high myopia is constantly rising. For educational purposes, in this chapter, complications of pathologic myopia will be divided into anterior (when structures external to the globe or anterior to the ora serrata are involved, such as motility disturbances and cataract) and posterior (when structures posterior to the ora serrata are involved, such as lacquer cracks, chorioretinal atrophy, Fuchs maculopathy, myopic choroidal neovascularization, and retinal detachment). Many treatments are available for pathologic myopia complications depending on their type, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections and surgery. We will focus on visual rehabilitation interventions, such as visual biofeedback and visual aids that in many cases are the only chance that the ophthalmologist has in order to help patients suffering from pathologic myopia to use at their maximum their residual vision.

Visual impairment is a growing public health challenge worldwide. Low vision has a huge impact on the patient's physical and mental capabilities. In children, visual impairment has a significant impact on their education, environmental learning, growth and hence, their career. Low vision rehabilitation (LVR) aims to enhance the individual's functional ability and independence by maximizing the use of the residual vision. With the wide availability of internet, devices like smart phones and tablets are increasingly being used as low visual aids. Despite these ongoing advances in the field of LVR, lack of awareness about low vision services amongst the eye care practitioners as well as the patients remain a major barrier in the uptake of these services. Hence, in this review we outline the principles and details of various low vision aids with stress on the modern low vision rehabilitation services.
