Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is curative in patients with primary immunodeficiency syndrome. The safety and efficacy of HSCT as a therapeutic option for primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) have been studied by many research groups. The purpose of our study was to perform a bibliometric analysis of research on HSCT for the treatment of PID, to assess research trends in this field, and note future research priorities. The Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) was used to identify relevant publications. VOSviewer and CiteSpace software were used to analyze bibliometric parameters, such as yearly records, authors, grouped authors, countries, institutions, categories and keywords. There are 602 relevant records for the last decade (2013–2022). The top 5 productive authors and high-quality paper journals are listed. Reference co-citations analysis demonstrated recent research trends were “inborn errors of immunity,” “gene editing,” and “enteropathy.” Research on HSCT for the treatment of PID has increased rapidly in the last decade, and bibliometrics are valuable for researchers to obtain an overview of hot categories, academic collaborations and trends in this study field.

Attenuated humoral response against SARS‐CoV‐2 mRNA vaccination in allogeneic stem cell transplantation recipients

Antibody persistence several months after SARS‐CoV‐2 mRNA vaccination in allogeneic stem cell transplantation recipients remains largely unknown. We sequentially evaluated the humoral response to two doses of mRNA vaccines in 128 adult recipients and identified the risk factors involved in a poor response. The median interval between stem cell transplantation and vaccination was 2.7 years. The SARS‐CoV‐2 S1 antibody became positive after the second vaccination dose in 87.6% of the recipients, and the median titer was 1,235.4 arbitrary units (AU)/mL. In patients on corticosteroid treatment, the corticosteroid dose inversely correlated with antibody titer. Multivariate analysis identified risk factors for poor peak response such as an interval from stem cell transplantation ≤ 1 year, history of clinically significant cytomegalovirus infection, and use of > 5 mg/day prednisolone at vaccination. Six months after vaccination, the median titer decreased to 185.15 AU/mL, and use of > 5 mg/day prednisolone at vaccination was significantly associated with a poor response. These results indicate that early vaccination after stem cell transplantation (<12 months) and cytomegalovirus infection are risk factors for poor peak response, while steroid use is important for a peak as well as a persistent response. In conclusion, although humoral response is observed in many stem cell transplantation recipients after two doses of vaccination, antibody titers diminish with time, and factors associated with persistence and a peak immunity should be considered separately.

A Bibliometric Analysis Study on Bone Marrow Transplantation Research Originating from Turkey

Aim: Scientific publications serve as indicators of global interest and activity in research. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of the scientific literature on bone marrow transplantation in Turkey between 1990 and 2022. Material and Methods: In this bibliometric study, we searched the Web of Science database for all biomedical articles published between 1990 and 2022. MESH terms related to "Bone marrow transplantation" were used as the search keyword. The search was then narrowed by selecting Turkey as the country of publication. All data were transferred from the relevant database to Vosviewer and biblioshiny programs and analyzed. Results: A total of 121 countries contributed to the bone marrow transplant literature with 41,236 publications. Turkey ranked 13th with 913 publications (2.214%). and 402 articles by 2991 authors from Turkey. This corresponded to 0.305 publications per author. These publications received 6.183 citations per publication. After 2014, the number of publications increased. Most articles (n=123) were published in 2015. In 2016, the number of publications decreased by almost half after the first peak and did not fall below 50 publications/per year in the following years. Ankara University (n=207), Hacettepe University (n=166), Gazi University (n=95), Erciyes University (n=82), and Akdeniz University (n=79) were the institutions that published the most publications on bone marrow transplantation. Conclusion: Bone marrow transplantation appears to be of interest to Turkish researchers; however, not to the expected level. Turkey continues to lag behind other countries in this field despite an increase in research activity pertaining to bone marrow transplants in recent years.
