Trend of Suicide Rates According to Urbanity among Adolescents by Gender and Suicide Method in Korea, 1997–2012

This study aims to quantifiably evaluate the trend of the suicide rate among Korean adolescents from 1997 to 2012 according to urbanity. We used national death certificates and registration population data by administrative district for 15–19 years-old adolescents. The annual percent change (APC) and average annual percent change (AAPC) were estimated by the Joinpoint Regression Program. The suicide rate in the rural areas was higher than that in the urban areas in both genders (males (/100,000), 12.2 vs. 8.5; females (/100,000), 10.2 vs. 7.4 in 2012). However, the trend significantly increased only in the urban area (AAPC [95% CI]: males 2.6 [0.7, 4.6], females 3.3 [1.4, 5.2]). In urban areas, the suicide rate by jumping significantly increased in both genders (AAPC [95% CI]: males, 6.7 [4.3, 9.1]; females, 4.5 [3.0, 6.1]). In rural areas, the rate by self-poisoning significantly decreased by 7.9% per year for males (95% CI: −12.5, −3.0) and the rate by hanging significantly increased by 10.1% per year for females (95% CI: 2.6, 18.2). The trend and methods of suicide differ according to urbanity; therefore, a suicide prevention policy based on urbanity needs to be established for adolescents in Korea.

Competencies of Dental Hygienists for Oral Care Service for People with Disability

Background: Dental treatment has shifted to the center of the community, and the public policy of the country has expanded to support the vulnerable classes such as the disabled. The dental profession needs education regarding oral health services for persons with disabilities, and it is necessary to derive the competencies for this. Therefore, we conducted this study to derive the normative ability to understand the role of a dental hygienist in the oral health service for persons with disabilities and improvement plans for education. Methods: We conducted a qualitative analysis for deriving competencies by analyzing the data collected through in-depth interviews with experts in order to obtain abilities through practical experience. Based on the competency criterion, relevant competency in the interview response was derived using the priori method, and it was confirmed whether the derived ability matched the ability determined by the respondent. Results: The professional conduct competencies of dental hygienists, devised by the Korean Association of Dental Hygiene, consists of professional behavior, ethical decision-making, self-assessment skills, lifelong learning, and accumulated evidence. Also, core competencies of the American Dental Education Association competencies for dental hygienist classification such as ethics, responsibility for professional actions, and critical thinking skills were used as the criterion. The dental hygienist's abilities needed for oral health care for people with disabilities, especially in the detailed abilities to fulfill these social needs, were clarified. Conclusion: To activate oral health care for people with disabilities, it is necessary for dental hygienists to fulfill their appropriate roles, and for this purpose, competency-based curriculum restructuring is indispensable. A social safety net for improving the oral health of people with disabilities can be secured by improving the required skills-based education system of dental hygienists and strengthening the related infrastructure.

Mediating Effect of Organizational Commitment in the Relationship between Professional Identity and Job Satisfaction

Objectives: Professional identity, which is a subjective evaluation of self-determination, has been studied as an important factor in determining job satisfaction. Organizational commitment can be expected to play an important role in the relationship between professional identity and job satisfaction. The study was aimed to examine mediating effect of organizational commitment of physician assistants in the relationship between professional identity and job satisfaction. Methods: The participants of this study were 124 nurses who agreed to participate in the study among physician assistants working at two university hospitals located in B metropolitan city and Y city. The measurement tools included a questionnaire on professional identity, organizational commitment, and job satisfaction. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, partial correlation coefficients, and multiple regression were used to analyze results. Results: The mean score of professional identity was 3.36 ± 0.42, organizational commitment was 3.28 ± 0.54, and job satisfaction was 3.12 ± 0.38. There were significant positive partial correlations between professional identity and organizational commitment (r = 0.56, p < 0.001), professional identity and job satisfaction (r = 0.65, p < 0.001), and organizational commitment and job satisfaction (r = 0.61, p < 0.001). Organizational commitment was a mediator between professional identity and job satisfaction. Conclusions: Based on this study, organizational commitment promotion strategies to improve job satisfaction are needed. These results will contribute to development of education program of a physician assistant and promotion of quality of medical services.
