Current Status and Outlook of Odor Removal Technologies in Wastewater Treatment Plant

Abstract: The ever increasing public complaints arising from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) grow since sewerage treatment has been associated with nauseous odorous on account of the anaerobic decomposition process and emission. Various physical/ chemical and/or biological methods were used for abating odours worldwide. Thus, an updated comprehensive review for the WWTP odor abatement technologies is urgently required. This study reviews the new achievements of odor abatement technologies (adsorption, chemical scrub… Show more

“…Normally, technologies of H 2 S removal from odor gas derived from WWTPs include physical/chemical (such as adsorption, chemical scrubbing) and biological approaches (biofiltration, biotrickling, activated sludge diffusion etc.) [66]. Singh et al [67] used zinc oxide-decorated multi-wall carbon nanotubes (ZnO-MWCNTs), which was a synthesis of the carbon nanotube and zinc oxide, for a high value (98%) of H 2 S removal in a bench-scale fixed bed reactor.…”

“…On 8 th to 10 th day retention time, the gas produced was colorless and later with some little faint smell like that of rotten egg but was not flammable. The gas extinguished an ignited match, the ability of the gas to extinguish light on ignition indicated the presence of Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in higher quantity which is inflammable but colorless and odorless as described by [18], [16], [24] while the rotten egg odor indicated the presence of H 2 S but in low quantity because if it were in higher quantity than CO 2 it would be combustible, for combustibility is one of the H 2 S characteristics as revealed by [23,20]. On the 10 th day retention time the Carbon dioxide production ceased; this marks the activation phase of methanogenic which produces burnable gas on 11 th day of the plant set up.…”

“…Hydrogen sulfide is formed in sewage waters by sulfatereducing bacteria that can occur naturally in water [2][3][4]. As a rule, sulfate concentration in sewage waters corresponds to its content in tap water.…”
