Current status and performance goals for serum thyrotropin (TSH) assays

Abstract: Current medical needs dictate that laboratories offer thyrotropin (TSH) assays that can reliably measure low TSH concentrations--a prerequisite for using the more cost-effective TSH-centered strategy currently recommended by the American Thyroid Association. This study reviews the functional performance of the TSH immunometric assay methods currently used in clinical practice. Methodological differences between methods, the rationale for using the 20% interassay CV as the functional sensitivity limit for patie… Show more

“…2,3 This makes it impossible for clinicians to diagnose the condition solely on clinical grounds and they therefore have to rely on biochemical measurement of thyroid hormones and TSH in confirming the diagnosis. 4 However, the wide use of these biochemical measurements has led to a spectrum of abnormalities being detected, ranging from subclinical to overt disease. 5,6 Patients with both overt and subclinical hypothyroid disease (SCH) may have symptoms that could lead to impairment in health status and quality of life (QoL).…”

“…TSH levels are measured using ultrasensitive radioimmunoassay method [31] and analyzed with the IMMULITE automatic chemiluminescent immunoassay analyser according to the manufacturer's instructions. To avoid inter-assay variation, a single batch of IMMULITE commercial kits was used.…”
