Current status in biotechnological production and applications of glycolipid biosurfactants

Abstract: Biosurfactants are natural compounds with surface activity and emulsifying properties produced by several types of microorganisms and have been considered an interesting alternative to synthetic surfactants. Glycolipids are promising biosurfactants, due to low toxicity, biodegradability, and chemical stability in different conditions and also because they have many biological activities, allowing wide applications in different fields. In this review, we addressed general information about families of glycolipi… Show more

“…Surfactants are amphipathic molecules with surface activities to reduce surface tensions. They are widely utilized as detergents, solubilizers or emulsifying agents in many industrial fields such as petroleum, food, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries [ 1 , 2 ]. The total worldwide production of surfactants is estimated to be over 15 million tons per year, and expected to increase to over 24 million tons annually by 2020 [ 3 ].…”

“…Structurally, they are composed of a hydrophobic moiety that consists in a long-chain fatty acid (which can be aliphatic, hydroxylated, or unsaturated) in combination with a hydrophilic carbohydrate-based component (glucose, trehalose, mannose, galactose, sophorose, and rhamnose). 99 Rhamnolipids, sophorolipids, and MELs are among the bestknown glycolipids. Lipopetides are compounds formed by linear or cyclic peptides linked to a polypeptide tail.…”
