Current status of colon capsule endoscopy in clinical practice

Abstract: Colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) is used for restricted indications only. Growing demand for out-of-hospital treatment combined with technical and clinical improvements in quality has made a wider use plausible. Artificial intelligence-supported footage analysis and quality assessment might further improve quality and reduce the price of CCE to a competitive level.

“…Angiectasias can be documented in 30%-60% of those over 40-years-old, followed by findings associated with NSAIDs enteropathies, celiac disease, and tumors, among others. It is worth noting that in Stone et al [ 17 ], the mean age of the patient series (62.9 years) was lower than ours, and patients with Crohn's disease, manifest and obscure GIB were excluded[ 5 , 16 , 17 ].…”

“…Traditional pill endoscopes include the PillCam ESO2 (Medtronic, Dublin, Ireland), PillCam ESO3 (Medtronic, Dublin, Ireland), and CapsoCam Plus (CapsoVision, Saratoga, CA, USA) [ 34 , 35 ]. Although these capsules are primarily intended to analyze only the small bowel and colon [ 36 , 37 ], VCE has been studied for BE screening. However, its widespread use has been limited by lower image quality and accuracy than standard upper endoscopy of the upper GI tract [ 38 ].…”
