Buildings account for ∼40% of global energy demands, and the increased adoption of innovative solutions for buildings represents an enormous potential to reduce energy demands and greenhouse gas emissions. Here, we critically review the current and future materials and solutions for the construction sector. We describe how policy affects innovative businesses and the adoption of new products and solutions. We investigate how the building envelope and user behavior determine building energy demands. Compared to conventional solutions, superinsulation materials (vacuum insulation panels, silica aerogel) can achieve the same thermal performance with drastically thinner insulation. With low-emissivity coatings and appropriate filler gasses, double and triple glazing reduces thermal losses by an order of magnitude. Vacuum and aerogel glazing reduce these even further. Switchable glazing solutions maximize solar gains during wintertime and minimize illumination demands whilst avoiding overheating in summer. Upon integration of renewable energy systems, buildings become both producers and consumers of energy. Combined with the dynamic user behavior, temporal variations in energy production require thermal and electrical storage and the integration of buildings into smart grids and energy district networks. The combination of these measures can reduce the energy consumption of the building's stock by a factor of three.

Providing thermal protection when replacing window blocks in historical buildings

Abstract. The work presents the prerequisites to replace the window units in the historical buildings (primarily increased energy efficiency standards of buildings and significantly changed performance requirements of window units). The analysis of possible replacement options (full/partial) of window units of the historical buildings is done according to their architectural and historical values. A review is made of the existing technological capabilities of modern window systems and translucent filling (double-glazed windows), as well as the most common solutions used in practice. The issue of providing the temperature-humidity conditions of the nodes of adjunctions of the window blocks to the openings of the external walls in the winter operating conditions is considered. For this purpose, a numerical simulation of the temperature fields of the junction points is made for various structural embodiments of window frames. It is established that in the case of a full replacement of window blocks and maintaining the existing structure of external walls (the calculation is made using the example of the most common external wall for Central Russia -a brick wall 770 mm thick), condensation may form on the inner surface of window slopes. Different options are suggested for window blocks installation, which ensure the fulfillment of sanitary and hygienic requirements. Further directions for the research on the use of modern types of translucent structures in the historical buildings are outlined.

A considerable effort is devoted to devising retrofit solutions for reducing space-heating energy in the domestic sector. Existing UK solid-wall dwellings, which have both heritage values and historic fabric, are being improved but they tend to have meagre thermal performance, partly, due to the heat-loss through glazings. This paper takes comparative analyses approach to envisage space-heating supply required in order to maintain thermal comfort temperatures and attainable solar energy gains to households with the retrofit of an experimentally achievable thermal performance of the fabricated sample of triple vacuum glazing to a UK solid-wall dwelling. 3D dynamic thermal models (timely regimes of heating, occupancy, ventilation and internal heat gains) of an externally-insulated solidwall detached dwelling with a range of existing glazing types along with triple vacuum glazings are modelled. A dramatic decrease of space-heating load and moderate increase of solar gains are resulted with the dwelling of newly achievable triple vacuum glazings (having centre-of-pane U-value of 0.33 Wm -2 K -1 ) compared to conventional glazing types. The space-heating annual cost of single glazed dwellings was minimised to 15.31% (≈USD 90.7) with the retrofit of triple-vacuum glazings. An influence of total heat-loss through the fabric of solid-wall dwelling was analysed with steady-state calculations which indicates a fall of 10.23% with triple vacuum glazings compared to single glazings.
