Current stocking program of the sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus, L.) can negatively shape its genetic variability in the Middle Danube

Abstract: The Danube River was originally inhabited by six native sturgeon species, but currently, the sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus L.) is the only native sturgeon species still occupying the Slovak–Hungarian stretch of the Middle Danube. All sturgeon species are facing extinction, suffering from overfishing, water pollution, illegal fishing, poaching or other negative impacts. Urgent and proper actions are needed to prevent their extinction, and evaluating its genetic diversity is one of the essential tools of conservat… Show more

“…The primary reasons were already established as the following: there are low numbers of mature sterlets, insufficient evidence of natural reproduction, and the habitat is being fragmented and lost. Similar trends can be observed in other habitats of the species [10][11][12][13][14]. In response to the significant decline in sterlet populations including the Hungarian section of the Danube and its tributaries, several national and international conservation initiatives have been implemented [1,12,13].…”

“…Furthermore, there is a need to preserve the genetic diversity of the stocked individuals, which should be at a similar level to that expected in wild populations. A recent study on sterlet in Slovakia suggests a slight continuing decline in genetic diversity, which might be caused by insufficient interchange of individuals used for restocking (Pekárik et al, 2019).…”
