Current Understanding and Management of Plasma Cell Mastitis: Can We Benefit from What We Know?

Abstract: Background: Plasma cell mastitis (PCM), also known as mammary duct ectasia, is a chronic nonbacterial breast inflammation characterized by duct expansion and plasma cell infiltration. The severe and intense clinical manifestations profoundly affect the quality of life of female patients. Although the pathological process of PCM is known to include four stages (duct dilatation, inflammation, abscess and fistula), there is still lack of imaging techniques and serum markers with high specificity in clinical pract… Show more

“…In addition, we found that the serum levels of IgA and IgG were markedly suppressed in the treatment group of herbal drug combination compared to the CG ( Figure 5 ). Note that both IgA and IgG have been found to be crucial diagnostic serum markers for PCM patients ( Xing et al, 2022 ). Moreover, IgA is regarded as a major component of mucosal immunity that is closely related to the pathogenesis of PCM ( Betts et al, 2018 ; Bharathan and Mullarky, 2011 ).…”

“…In addition, we found that serum level of IgA and IgG level were markedly suppressed in the treatment group of herbal drug combination as compared to the control group (Figure 6). Of note, both IgA and IgG have been found to be crucial diagnostic serum markers for PCM patients 18 . Moreover, IgA is regarded as a major component of mucosal immunity which is closely related to the pathogenesis of PCM 19,20 .…”

“…According to different clinicopathological features, it can be divided into 4 stages: duct dilatation, inflammation, abscess, and fistula. [6] Accessory breast is also called supernumerary breast or polymastia. In normal development, most embryologic mammary ridges resolve, except for 2 segments in the pectoral region, which later become breasts.…”
