Current Understanding of the Neural Stem Cell Niches

Abstract: Neural stem cells (NSCs) are self-renewing, multipotent cells which give rise to all components of the central nervous system (CNS) during embryogenesis, but also activate in response to injury and disease and maintain a certain level of neurogenic activity throughout adulthood. This activity takes place in specialized regions of the brain, the neurovascular niches, whose main role is to control the behaviour of the CNS. In adult mammals, two main “canonical” niches have been described: The subventricular zone… Show more

“…In adult rodents, NSCs have been widely documented in the SVZ and the SGZ [ 21 , 22 ], but the hypothalamus, the neocortex and the inferior colliculus have recently been identified as new potential neurogenic zones [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. In these neurogenic regions, quiescent and activated NSCs are present, generating new neurons throughout life [ 25 , 26 , 27 ].…”

“…Based on all this evidence, we may wonder whether the vestibular nuclei can be considered as a NSC niche, as is the case for the SVZ and the SGZ. By synthesizing data from several studies (for review, see [ 22 , 29 ]), we are able to propose a list of criteria that would assign a NSC niche status to a particular cerebral region. Obviously, not all niches integrate all these distinct elements, and it is clear that a neurogenic niche represents a complex and dynamic entity in which the integration of multiple signals allows precise control of the NSCs proliferation and survival.…”

“…As a consequence of this, gapping is also a technical flaw that, in theory, can be remedied by a repair that is more long-lasting & uses less plastic. It is well established that early mobilization improves the overall result of flexor tendon repairs [4].…”

“…Neural stem cells (NSCs) reside in neurogenic niches, such as the subgranular zone and subventricular zone of the adult brain, and have the ability to self-renew and the potential to differentiate into other cell lines, including neurons, oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes (Llorente et al, 2022). Hence, the adoption of NSCs transplantation to replace lost cells and promote structural repair in cerebral infarction presents an ideal therapeutic strategy (Russo et al, 2018;Lyu et al, 2021).…”
