Customized, rapid-production microstereotactic table for surgical targeting: description of concept and in vitro validation

Abstract: Purpose To introduce a novel microstereotactic frame, called the Microtable, consisting of a tabletop that mounts on bone-implanted spherical markers. The microtable is customized for individual patient anatomy to guide a surgical instrument to a specified target. Methods Fiducial markers are bone-implanted, and CT scanning is performed. A microtable is custom-designed for the location of the markers and the desired surgical trajectory and is constructed using a computer-numerical-control machine. Validation… Show more

“…To achieve such accuracy, a robotically assisted procedure which overcomes the inability to precisely position the surgical drill using hand held instruments [5] was suggested [6][7][8][9][10]. The safe and effective conduction of an image guided, robotically assisted DCA procedure, strongly relies on the quality of the surgical plan and the accuracy at which the surgical plan can be registered to the physical patient intraoperatively.…”

“…Our microstereotactic frame competes with others of its kind 2,4 , rapid prototyping solutions 6,7 and further non-disposable platforms [8][9][10][11] . Another research group used bone cementfor deep brain stimulation, but performed a fixation of a small block directly to the skull 12 .…”

“…Different approaches for bone attached platforms for interventions around the head already exist and some of them are already commercialized or are under clinical testing [1][2][3] . Target objects are the cochlea, granuloma in the temporal bone, or anatomical structures inside the brain during interventions for deep brain stimulation.…”
