Cutaneous Adenomyoepithelioma: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Adenomyoepithelioma (AME) is a biphasic neoplasm of epithelial and myoepithelial cells. It is most commonly found in the breast, although rare cases have been reported from the lung, salivary glands, and skin. There are 5 well-documented cases of cutaneous AME in the literature. We report a new case of cutaneous AME. Our case was commingled with apocrine hidrocystoma. This is the first report of cutaneous AME in a male patient and the first to describe SOX10 immunostaining in cutaneous AME. We review the liter… Show more

“…Primary cutaneous AME is analogous to AME of the breast and is considered as an uncommon skin adnexal tumor 5 . Cutaneous AMEs have been reported to be associated with another adnexal tumor, including apocrine hidrocystoma, mixed tumor, and spiroadenoma, in several previous reports 7–9 . In our case, biphasic components of epithelial and myoepithelial cells formed a defined cutaneous nodule with a focal lobulated architecture.…”

“…AME or malignant AME has also been reported in the salivary glands, lungs, vulva, and skin 5 . Cutaneous AME is exceedingly rare, and there are few documented cases in the English literature 5–9 . In addition to AME, skin adnexal tumors displaying two cell populations include apocrine hidrocystoma, mixed tumor, and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC).…”

“…6 To the best of our knowledge, no cases of malignant cAME have been reported. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] A sparse amount of malignant AME of the breast has been reported. 12,13 Malignant changes most commonly involve the epithelial component when they occur.…”

“…1,2 Additional reports of rare tumors with both glandular and myoepithelial components have been reported in the literature and referred to as "adenomyoepithelioma." 6 Adenomyoepitheliomas are more commonly found in female patients and have been reported in the breast, tonsil, sweat glands, and lung. [7][8][9][10][11] The most common location of adenomyoepithelioma is the breast.…”
