Cutaneous adult myofibroma: a vascular neoplasm

Abstract: Infantile myofibromatosis is a distinctive type of fibromatosis that usually develops during the immediate perinatal period. There are variants with solitary and multiple tumors. Lesions confined to the skin, soft tissue, and bone carry a good prognosis, showing spontaneous regression. The prognosis, however, is much less favorable when visceral lesions are present and the outcome may be fatal. Only recently it became obvious that there is an adult counterpart of infantile myofibromatosis, characterized by sol… Show more

“…4 6 7 Indeed, differentiation of pericytes into myofibroblasts and smooth muscle cells has been documented. 7 This concept accounts for the spectrum of tumours and may explain the distinctive features of each variety. [4][5][6][7][8] The relation to the so called perivascular epithelioid cell is not known.…”

“…Consequently, the existence of the hemangiopericytoma as a distinct clinical entity was challenged [3]. The term myopericytoma, initially used to describe a subset of cutaneous myofibromas originating from the myopericyte [10], has gained support as the designation for a subset of neoplasms that would have been included in the broad hemangiopericytoma category. It was entered as a subgroup of perivascular tumors in the World Health Organization Classification of Soft Tissue Tumors [7].…”

“…Previously, Requena et al introduced the term "myopericytoma" as an alternative designation for solitary myofibroma, based on the supposed myopericytic differentiation of the tumour (2). The term "myopericytoma" encompasses a morphological spectrum of tumours including glomus tumours, myofibromatosis and infantile haemangiopericytoma, characterized by spindle cells with contractile features and various arrangement around blood vessels (3)(4)(5)(6).…”
