Cutaneous candidiasis caused by Candida kefyr

Abstract: Candidiasis is an acute or subacute fungal infection caused by fungi that belongs to candida genus, with Candida albicansbeing the most frequent causative agent. Candida kefyr is a rare cause of candidiasis which has been reported in systemic candidiasis and deep infections. However, to date, it has never been reported as a cause in dermatophytosis. We report a case of candidiasis caused by Candida kefyr in a 72-year-old woman with a chief complaint of pruritic erythematous rash on the back from one day prior … Show more

“…The anamorph name of K. marxianus is Candida kefyr. Several studies reported opportunistic infections with K. marxianus in humans with various predisposing conditions but could not be appropriately evaluated due to uncertainties regarding methodology for species identification (Nurdin et al, 2021;Alp et al, 2021;Pedaci et al, 2021;Jyothi et al, 2021). Aldejohann et al (2021) reported eye infection with K. marxianus following surgery (transplantation of a lamellar endothelial corneal graft).…”

“…Endogenous factors, like Chronic disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity, endocrinopathy, age related, immunological and physiological changes in pregnancy whereas exogenous factors include skin cleanliness, climatic variations, foot bath habits and contact with patients of same disease. 4 A systematic review found that 10.34% of the C. albicans isolates in India were resistant to medication. 5 Some fungi produce mycotoxins, which are responsible for multiple health hazards.…”

“…Individuals with compromised immune systems, especially those suffering from haematological malignancies, have reported cases of C. kefyr . This organism is implicated in causing a variety of conditions, including urinary tract infections, endocarditis, fungal keratitis and onychomycosis (Nurdin et al, 2021 ). Various studies have identified Candida species, including kefyr , residing in dairy products like milk and cheese.…”

“…Furthermore, C. kefyr has been identified as a source of mastitis in ruminant animals like cows and goats, which impacts both the milk's quality and quantity, and it has also been detected in the milk of asymptomatic goats (Zaragoza et al, 2021 ). The consumption of dairy products that contain C. kefyr may facilitate the transmission of these organisms to individuals who are at increased risk, particularly hospitalised patients and those with underlying medical conditions (Nurdin et al, 2021 ). The presence of this species in dairy items enhances its ability to establish itself within the gastrointestinal tract, thereby elevating the probability of colonisation events (Wawron et al, 2011 ).…”
