Cutaneous meningioma: A cytomorphological diagnosis

Abstract: Cutaneous meningiomas are rare tumors. These are ectopic meningothelial cells located in the dermis and subcutis, and are usually seen on the scalp. Here, we report the case of a 40-year-old woman who presented with a slowly growing asymptomatic mass over the scalp in the right parieto-occipital region. The lesion was firm, adherent to underlying structures, and covered by normal appearing skin. The cytomorphological features along with histological and immunohistochemical studies showing positivity for epithe… Show more

“…7 Nuclear grooves and psammoma bodies with or without calcification are also often present in these lesions. 9,10 Type II and III meningiomas carry a worse prognosis than type I. 9 Meningiomas can show overlapping morphology with other spindle cell tumors, such as sarcomatous squamous cell carcinoma, schwannoma, cellular neurothekeoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, perineurioma, leiomyosarcoma, solitary fibrous tumor (hemangiopericytoma), and melanoma.…”

“…12,14 After intensive search, we found 8 other reported cases of cutaneous meningioma in the Indian literature, out of which 7 were located in the scalp and one in the submandibular region. 1,13,[15][16][17][18][19][20] This is the 4 t h Indian case of Rudimentary meningocele and the 1 st case of RM to be located in the spine in the Indian literature.…”
