Cutaneous Type Adnexal Tumors Outside the Skin

Abstract: Cutaneous adnexal neoplasms are complex lesions, including benign and malignant neoplasms in addition to malformations and hamartomas. They show one or several features of differentiation along follicular, sebaceous, apocrine, and eccrine lines. Rarely, cutaneous adnexal neoplasms or their mimics may arise outside the skin. In some organs, such as the parotid gland, a number of tumors comprise well-established entities, whereas in the majority of cases an extracutaneous occurrence of cutaneous-type adnexal les… Show more

“…We have also observed sebaceous differentiation in a distinct subset of breast tumors which, in our view, are poorly characterized in breast pathology. They often show areas reminiscent of adenoid cystic carcinoma and constantly manifest plentiful ductal structures lined by an eosinophilic cuticle [18].…”

“…Cutaneous SC can rarely involve the skin of the breast [19,20] or the nipple [21]. The distinction between mammary and cutaneous SC can be made when there is no connection to the overlaying skin, both macroscopically and microscopically, or the tumor is completely surrounded by breast tissue [18]. Importantly, extraocular cutaneous SC can represent a manifestation of Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS), a phenotypic variant of Lynch syndrome (LS)/hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer syndrome [22].…”

“…[15][16][17][18][19] Morphologically similar neoplasms may rarely arise in the salivary glands [20][21][22][23] and exceptionally in the breast. 24,25 Alterations of the CYLD gene are detected in a majority of familial cases of BSS and allelic disorders. [26][27][28][29] This tumor suppressor gene is localized on the long arm of chromosome 16, has 20 exons, and encodes a 120 kDa evolutionarily conserved protein.…”

“…La palidez citoplasmática característica es debida al acúmulo de glucógeno de los mismos, fácilmente demostrado con técnicas de PAS, que condicionan una coloración citoplasmática rosada-magenta (McKee et al, 2005;Kazakov et al, 2012;Lever et al, 2015).…”
