CXCL8, CXCL9, and CXCL10 serum levels increase in syphilitic patients with seroresistance

Abstract: Syphilis infected by Treponema pallidum. As a major global public health problem, as many as 12 million new infections are diagnosed each year worldwide. 1 Parenteral penicillin is crucial to the cure of syphilis at all stages. Because of the difficulty of rapid culture of T. pallidum in vitro and the low sensitivity of PCR detection of patients' serum, 2-4 the evaluation of the efficacy of syphilis treatment depends almost entirely on serological testing. Non-treponemal serum antibody titers detected by tolul… Show more

“…In the scientific literature, a role of this class of molecules in viral infections has been recognized; these would seem to act as a sort of obstacle for the entry of viral particles as well as subsequently inhibit proliferation, regulate apoptosis and, as previously mentioned, modulate the immune response. Among several cytokines, the ones most involved in viral infections, especially at the respiratory level, seem to be CXCL10 and CXCL8 (Dong et al., 2021). Usually, following a viral infection, the chemokines in circulation increase to counteract the disease, but it can also happen that the virus interferes with the cytokine/receptor system in its favor to modify the different intracellular pathways by increasing the viral replication rate (Alcami, 2016).…”

“…CXCL13 has other interesting applications, including treatment monitoring in neurosyphilis [ 36 ]. Elevated concentrations of CXCL8, CXCL10, and IL-10 may also be potential biological markers of neurosyphilis, especially asymptomatic neurosyphilis [ 37 39 ]. Meanwhile, the increased levels of CXCL9, CXCL7, CCL24, IL-17, IL-26, and migration inhibitory factor (MIF) of macrophages in the CSF of neurosyphilis patients suggested their role as promising differential diagnostic tools for neurosyphilis [ 37 , 40 42 ].…”

Although these cytokine changes are still in their infancy for the diagnosis of neurosyphilis, their importance cannot be ignored due to the lack of ideal neurosyphilis biomarkers.…”
