Cycle Transport Partnerships for Attaining Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract

Cycle transport partnerships are multistakeholder initiatives designed to support the growth of cycling as part of a contribution to sustainable transport futures in line with the sustainable development goals. While transport and mobility issues are not a goal in themselves, accessible and affordable transport is an important contributor to a range of individual goals as noted in the text. The range of stakeholders involved in developing cycle transport depends on type of initiative, but all work within a broader focus on sustainable transport. Transport cycling includes the use of electrically assisted cycles (e-cycling), transport of people and goods by cycle, and public-use cycles. It should also be noted that in maximizing efficiency for sustainable mobility that cycling may not always involve traditional bicycle designs, but for the carriage for good and for intermodal use, numerous design possibilities may be appropriate (Cox 2015). Significant shifts in modal share within the transport sector require more than individual-level behavioral change (Banister 2005; Horton and Parkin 2012). While the bulk of recent research on transport cycling is focused on urban mobility, this is a reflection of the largely urban location of the studies in industrialized nations; the potential scope of cycle transport extends beyond the urban (Cox 2010).
