“…The small oval mucoid cells (Type 4), characterized by flocculent granular material and a large eccentric nucleus, correspond with the LH-secreting cells of the pig identified by Desclin (1965) and Herlant & Ectors (1969). Bugnon (1963) identified them as gamma cells or thyrotrophs because of their affinity for Alcian blue and aldehyde fuchsin, but the quantitative and qualitative changes in these cells coincident with the luteal phase of the sow's sexual cycle observed by Cleveland & Wolfe (1933) and Desclin (1965), indicate that they are not thyrotrophs but LH-gonadotrophs. In addition, Herlant & Ectors report that they have localized luteotrophic hormone in these cells by the fluorescent-antibody technique.…”

“…The latter author observed that the size and extent of the pars intermedia tended to vary considerably under the influence of domestication. The cytology of the pars distalis of the domestic pig has been investigated by Cleveland & Wolfe (1933), Bugnon (1963), Desclin (1965) and Herlant selective stains and that one variety of gonadotroph (the LH-secreting cell) possesses distinctive morphological features which make the recognition of this cell type more certain than in most mammalian pituitaries so far studied. Maurer & Lewis (1922) described the cells of the pars intermedia of the domestic pig and contrasted their staining characteristics and post-mortem changes with those of the basiphil cells of the pars distalis.…”

“…The present investigations show, however, that there is another factor concerned in this physiological mechanism apart from the ovaries, for vitally stained reticulo-endothelial cells appear about the middle of the " potential cycle " after ovariectomy . Smith and Engle (1929), Wolfe (1931), Wolfe, Cleveland, and Campbell (1932), and Cleveland and Wolfe (1933) proved that the activity of the anterior pituitary is cyclic in nature; in fact the cyclic activity of the ovary is subordinate and dependent on that of the pituitary through its gonadotrophic hormones. The middle of the cycle is the time when the ovaries are expected to be under the influence of the folliclestimulating hormone of the anterior pituitary and the endometrium under the influence of oestrogens.…”

“…I n the present research it was found that the cyclic behaviour of the macrophages still exists after ovariectomy and is intensified by moderate estrogenic stimulation. This cyclic behaviour in ovariectomized animals may be due to an indirect pituitary control through an extra-ovarian estrogen, possibly suprarenal, since the pituitary is known to possess an inherent cyclic activity (Smith and Engle, I929 ; Wolfe, I931 ; Wolfe, Cleveland, and Campbell, I932 ;Cleveland and Wolfe, 1933).…”

“…His histological follow-up by biopsies in patients showing clinical improvement indicated regressive changes in the neoplasm, and he states that neoplasms showing predominantly adenocarcinomatous structure tend to become more scirrhous in type, with considerable reduction of the quantity of malignant tissue in standard microscopical fields. Colston and Brendler (1947) stress the value of orchidectomy and estrogen therapy in advanced inoperable carcinoma of the prostate and in reducing the size of moderately advanced tumours and so rendering them accessible to surgery. Dodds (1948), McCaffery and Hess (1948), Heckel (1948), and many others express similar views.…”
