“…Cyclical parenteral nutrition has been shown to maintain hormonal rhythms more than a continuous infusion, and this was associated with clinically beneficial effects [16]. However, the drugs used to provide sedation for ventilated patients are known to suppress circadian rhythmicity.…”

“…Cyclical PN should be considered for patients who are hemodynamically and metabolically stable, have increasing activity and mobility, need long-term support (months to years), or need mobilization of lipid stores. In a review article by Matuchansky et al [39], the benefits of cyclic PN are cited as producing higher rates of lipid oxidation, lower rates of lipid storage, gains in visceral protein, and less fluid imbalance as compared with continuous PN. These benefits are especially important for patients who already have excess fat stores and for those on hypocaloric support who need to maintain LBM and liberate lipids from stores for essential fatty acids.…”

“…61 Compared with continuous infusion of TPN, cyclic infusion has been shown to reduce the incidence of liver-related complications. 62 In addition, overfeeding, and ω-6 fatty acids in excess of 1 g/kg per day in the absence of overfeeding, have been shown to increase the incidence of liver disease. 21,63 TPN-induced steato hepatitis is similar to nonalcoholic steato hepatitis.…”
