Cyclodextrin-Based Metal-Organic Nanotube as Fluorescent Probe for Selective Turn-On Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide in Living Cells Based on H2S-Involved Coordination Mechanism

Abstract: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been considered as the third biologically gaseous messenger (gasotransmitter) after nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). Fluorescent detection of H2S in living cells is very important to human health because it has been found that the abnormal levels of H2S in human body can cause Alzheimer’s disease, cancers and diabetes. Herein, we develop a cyclodextrin-based metal-organic nanotube, CD-MONT-2, possessing a {Pb14} metallamacrocycle for efficient detection of H2S. CD-MONT-2′ … Show more

“…Metal-organic interactions have been attracting considerable attention from chemists and material scientists in the formation of 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their great potential in the areas of gas adsorption and energy storage. Elements of chirality have already been introduced into MOFs [ 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 ]. In the assembly of chiral NTs, it is especially important to carefully choose organic ligands and metal ions, search crystallization conditions, including guest molecules, and adopt appropriate synthesis strategies.…”

“…Currently, the most common analysis for H 2 S detection mainly focuses on the instrumental analysis (such as gas chromatography, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry), fluorescence methods and colorimetric sensors, etc . ,,, However, instrumental analysis often requires tedious sample preparation or sophisticated equipment, and is not suitable for routine laboratory and on-site analyses. , Fluorescence methods mainly depend on the fluorescence of probes, which are easily interrupted by the quenching effects due to the oxygen, humidity and foreign species. , Alternatively, colorimetric assay gains increasing attention, attributing to the simple detection by naked eyes, short assay time, relatively low cost and no requirements for skillful technicians . Due to the unique fluorescence properties, localized surface plasmon resonance and catalytic performances of NPs, ,,, NPs based colorimetric methods have been widely exploited for the detection of H 2 S (Table ).…”

“…Cyclodextrins are supramolecular hosts that are used widely for a variety of applications, including drug delivery [1][2][3], odor neutralization [4], supramolecular catalysis [5][6][7], and toxicant detection [8,9]. Their hydrophobic interiors allow them to form inclusion complexes with hydrophobic guests [10,11], while their hydrophilic exteriors impart aqueous solubility [12,13].…”
