Cyclodextrin-based nanosponges: a propitious platform for enhancing drug delivery

Abstract: This emerging technology of cyclodextrin-based nanosponges is expected to provide technical solutions to the formulation arena and to come up with some successful products in the pharmaceutical market. It also has an exciting future in the field of therapeutics wherein it can cater site-directed drug delivery and hence it possesses vibrant opportunities.

“…23,27,28 In particular, NS provide the advantage of an efficient tailoring of their structural and functional properties (e.g. hydrophobicity of chain side groups, degree of crosslinking and branches and mesh size of the gel network) by acting on specific factors during the synthesis of the polymer.…”

“…26 The polymer matrix of NSs has shown to be able to retain large fractions of water within its structure, affording homogeneous gel phases. 27 Besides their potential practical applications as nano-carriers of bioactive agents, 28,29 the study of the behaviour of water entrapped in NS hydrogels can provide new fundamental insights into the water-water and water-polymer interactions in soft confining systems. This is due to the simultaneous presence of hydrogen bond donor/acceptor groups in the polymer skeleton, as well as due to the presence of nano-spaces where water can be confined.…”
