Cyclodextrin modified filter paper for removal of cationic dyes/Cu ions from aqueous solutions

Abstract: A filter paper was functionalized with β-cyclodextrin and citric acid via esterification reaction for the removal of dyes and Cu ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption capacity and removal performance of the modified filter paper (MFP) was investigated using static and dynamic adsorption experiments. The static adsorption data fit well the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, and the adsorption capacity of Methylene Blue (MB), Brilliant Green (BG), Rhodamine-B (RB) and Cu(II) over the MFP were 124.6 m… Show more

“…The advantage of adsorption is that gold can be recovered in small quantities from either primary or secondary solutions. Adsorption is easy to apply and if the adsorbent material is well chosen, it can have efficiencies that should not be neglected [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”

“…However, MB and RR are a carcinogenic, non-degradable materials and causes serious environmental problems against aquatic animals, plants and human beings [4]. The existence of dyes in aqueous environments undesirably affects their esthetic nature [5][6][7][8][9][10]. Some side effects have been reported for MB and RR at high dosage such as eye burns, chest pain, fast breathing, confusion and profuse sweating [11].…”

“…The functionalized filter paper showed a significant adsorption capacity for Cu(II) (39.1 mg g −1 ) when compared to unmodified filter paper (0.62 mg g −1 ). As was previously discussed, citric acid, and not the CD cavity, had the main role in the sorption process [124].…”

“…Cellulose-CD materials have also been studied for the absorption of metal ions. Li et al [124] modified filter paper with β-CD, using citric acid as a crosslinker. This way, the hydroxyl groups of cellulose and those of β-CD underwent simultaneous esterification with the polyacid.…”
