CYCLONE Unified Deployment and Management of Federated, Multi-cloud Applications

Abstract: Various Cloud layers have to work in concert in order to manage and deploy complex multi-cloud applications, executing sophisticated workflows for Cloud resource deployment, activation, adjustment, interaction, and monitoring. While there are ample solutions for managing individual Cloud aspects (e.g. network controllers, deployment tools, and application security software), there are no well-integrated suites for managing an entire multi cloud environment with multiple providers and deployment models. This pa… Show more

“…Organizing the structure of distributed brokers is a critical element, as queries and metric statistics need to propagate in an efficient way among peers (meta-brokers). Therefore, in the modeling phase of the decentralized federation structure [19,20], a systematic and automated approach is required for exchange of the essential metrics among peers regarding the associated resource states. Based on this critical information, meta-brokering peers perform the meta-scheduling of client applications, and manage the dynamicity of federated cloud sites.…”

“…But most of these solutions work only on statically available cluster and cloud resources, such as Mesos [11], Kubernetes [12] and Docker/Swarm [13]. Some Multi-Cloud deployment solutions, such as CYCLONE [14]…”

“…So, applications deployment automation and movement of large data volumes are the key problems that the research infrastructures need to solve to increase effectiveness of bioinformatics research. While the CYCLONE project (http://www.cycloneproject.eu/) [11] attempts to address bioinformatics applications automation, the dedicated network infrastructure provisioning will require corresponding ZTP functionality from the GEANT network.…”

“…SlipStream [26] is an open source cloud application manager. is used within the CYCLONE project [11] to deploy cloud applications onto one or more IaaS cloud infrastructures and to manage the cloud resources allocated to the running cloud applications. The core SlipStream component is the deployment engine that is augmented with "App Store", "Cloud Service Catalog", dashboard, and monitoring to provide a complete PaaS environment for applications development and operation also referred to as DevOps.…”
