Cyclonic eddy entrains Orinoco River Plume in eastern Caribbean

Abstract: “Mesoscale” eddies are large whirlpools in the ocean with diameters of hundreds of kilometers. Their influence can extend to depths of 1000 m or greater. Oceanographers are only now beginning to document the prevalence, extent, and influence of such features in the world ocean. The availability of third‐generation ocean color imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer‐MODIS sensors aboard NASAs AQUA and TERRA platforms, and support for direct observation at sea, have now allowed characteriz… Show more

“…North Brazil Current (NBC) rings carry these low-salinity waters northward along the east coasts of the Lesser Antilles (Carton and Chao 1999;Murphy et al 1999;Goñ i and Johns 2001). As a result, low-salinity water extends across the Caribbean basin and increases from August-November to DecemberJanuary (Corredor et al 2004). Concurrently, Chérubin and Richardson (unpubl.…”

“…chaotic section of megasequence 3 seen in Fig. 7), with some sediment derived from the subsiding Aves Ridge, and pelagic sediment entering the Grenada basin by northward flowing Caribbean ocean currents (Corredor et al, 2004). Deplus et al (2001) describes modern-day, large-scale debris avalanche and debris flow deposits in the Grenada basin coming from the Lesser Antilles Arc.…”

“…Indeed, a few months after the peak seasonal rain in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, a freshwater plume extends northwestward across the eastern Caribbean Sea, starting in July-August and continuing until October-November ( Figs. 2 and 4; Muller-Karger et al, 1998;Hernandez-Guerra and Joyce, 2000;Hellweger and Gordon, 2002;Corredor et al, 2004).…”
