Background: Cystic echinococcosis is a parasitic disease of major public health concern in many countries. Infection is generally acquired during childhood and symptoms may appear later in adulthood. The study aimed to determine the pattern and characteristics of cystic echinococcosis in adults from an endemic area (Morocco), where a control and prevention program has been implemented. Methods: Adult patients diagnosed and operated for echinococcosis between 2010 and 2016 were investigated. Reports containing details regarding each patient were established and completed. Results: Over the study period, 260 patients were investigated with a decreasing trend in patients' numbers. Adults from rural areas were significantly predominant (74.2%) (p < 0.01). Females were more infected (55.8%) than males (44.2%). Adults aged 18-43 years were the most affected (52.3%) (p < 0.01). All of the patients had single organ involvement. Liver location was preponderant (63.8%) and patients with uncommon locations were rare (6.9%). Cysts' distribution varied by gender, age group and origin. Mean length of hospital stay was 5.5 days, with relatively higher periods in patients aged 57-82 years and in patients with unusual locations of cysts. Conclusion: Active transmission of cystic echinococcosis can still occur in areas where surveillance programs have been implemented. Many factors affect features of the disease and should be considered in prevention and control programs in endemic areas.

The epidemiology of neglected tropical diseases (NTD) is persistently underprioritized, despite NTD being widespread among the poorest populations and in the least developed countries on earth. This situation necessitates thorough and efficient public health intervention. Romania is at the brink of becoming a developed country. However, this South-Eastern European country appears to be a region that is susceptible to an underestimated burden of parasitic diseases despite recent public health reforms. Moreover, there is an evident lack of new epidemiologic data on NTD after Romania’s accession to the European Union (EU) in 2007. Using the national ICD-10 dataset for hospitalized patients in Romania, we generated time series datasets for 2008–2018. The objective was to gain deep understanding of the epidemiological distribution of three selected and highly endemic parasitic diseases, namely, ascariasis, enterobiasis and cystic echinococcosis (CE), during this period and forecast their courses for the ensuing two years. Through descriptive and inferential analysis, we observed a decline in case numbers for all three NTD. Several distributional particularities at regional level emerged. Furthermore, we performed predictions using a novel automated time series (AutoTS) machine learning tool and could interestingly show a stable course for these parasitic NTD. Such predictions can help public health officials and medical organizations to implement targeted disease prevention and control. To our knowledge, this is the first study involving a retrospective analysis of ascariasis, enterobiasis and CE on a nationwide scale in Romania. It is also the first to use AutoTS technology for parasitic NTD.

In Morocco, the National Hydatidosis Control Program has approved considerable progress. However, updating epidemiological profile data of the disease is necessary. This study is carried out to explore the characteristics and epidemiological profile of Hydatidosis in Tangier-Tetouan-Al-Hoceima region. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study from 28 April 2019 to 18 February 2020. The data collected covering 2014-2018 period from the program reports. The statistical analysis was performed by EpiInfo 7. In total, 94 cases were notified. In 2015, we recorded the highest incidence (0.83 cases/100.000 inhabitants). The highest percentage of patients was in Tetouan (28,7%). 54.3% of cases were women and 57.4% were from rural areas. The age of 47,3% of the cases was [18-40[years. The association between the professional status and sex was statistically significant (p<0.05). 94.4% of cases, in the first stage of infection, were diagnosed by ultrasound. 84.7% presented hepatic localization. Almost all cases (98.9%) were treated surgically. In conclusion, the National Hydatidosis Control Program should direct the actions in rural areas where the living conditions of the population are precarious. The study of canine Hydatidosis will also be necessary in the context of environmental health to carry out an integrated control for the human Hydatidosis disease.
