Cystic lymphangioma of the breast in an 8-year-old boy: Report of a case with a review of the literature

Abstract: Cystic lymphangiomas are lymphatic malformations rather than true neoplasms. These are mainly childhood lesions. Involvement of the breast is extremely uncommon, and to the best of our knowledge only 17 such cases have been found in the literature. Breast involvement is even rarer in children, as only four of the reported cases are in the pediatric age group. We herein report a case of cystic lymphangioma of the breast in an 8-year-old male child, which was treated by excision. A review of the reported cases i… Show more

“…The mammography identified a round/lobulated lesion with increased opacity, whereas the ultrasonography showed a multiloculated, hypoechoic, cystic mass, with variable sized septa with solid components. [ 31 ] Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides more accurate images and a more in-depth assessment of the tumor. [ 10 ] In MRI, cystic lymphangiomas are seen as septated masses with a low T1-weighted and high T2-weighted signal intensity.…”

“… 3 Lymphatic malformation of the breast is rare, most often affecting young adult females, and it is especially uncommon among female infants. 4 The same investigators found only 17 cases of lymphatic malformation of the breast described in the literature, and of these, four cases were among children, and one occurred in a pediatric female patient. 4,5 Thus, it is rare to see a pediatric-aged female patient with lymphatic malformation of the breast.…”
