CYSTM, a Novel Non-Secreted Cysteine-Rich Peptide Family, Involved in Environmental Stresses in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: The cysteine-rich transmembrane module (CYSTM) is comprised of a small molecular protein family that is found in a diversity of tail-anchored membrane proteins across eukaryotes. This protein family belongs to novel uncharacteristic non-secreted cysteine-rich peptides (NCRPs) according to their conserved domain and small molecular weight, and genome-wide analysis of this family has not yet been undertaken in plants. In this study, 13 CYSTM genes were identified and located on five chromosomes with diverse dens… Show more

“…Peanuts growing in these types of fields are impaired by soil salinity throughout their life cycle and their seed germination is the more sensitive stage to salt stress [3,5]. Soil salinity can create osmotic potential around the seed and cause excessive ion toxicity (Na + and Cl − ) to seeds [6][7][8]. Therefore, the exposure of seeds to soil salinity results in lower seed viability, reduced germination percentage, increased germination time, and even total inhibition of germination [5,9].…”

“…Luciferase complementary imaging (LCI) assays were performed as previously described (Chen et al, 2008; Xu et al, 2018). In brief, the full-length CDS of CEPR2 was cloned into the pCAMBIA1300-nLUC (nLUC) vector to generate the CEPR2-nLUC construct, and the full-length CDS of NRT1.2 was cloned into the pCAMBIA1300-cLUC (cLUC) vector to generate the NRT1.2-cLUC construct.…”

“…Plants must continuously adapt to adverse environmental conditions, including temperature, salinity, nitrate (NO 3 - ), or drought (Li et al, 2019; Soma et al, 2017; Teardo et al, 2019; Xu et al, 2018; Yang et al, 2019; Zhang et al, 2018). Upon sensing environmental stressors, plants stop growing and trigger protective responses (Wang et al, 2018).…”

“…The isoelectric points and molecular weights of the STMPs were obtained on the ExPASy Proteomics Server. Promoter sequences were obtained from TAIR and analyzed using the PlantCARE website as described previously (Xu et al ). All software and websites used are listed in Table S2.…”
