“…On the other hand, West et a1 [21] obtained excellent control with just simple mastectomy, with or without axillary dissection, in patients with malignant lesions especially those with tumors measuring 5 cm or less. This procedure is also favored by several other authors [ 1,6,17,18,22,23]. Understandably, removal of the pectoral muscles would be justified if the tumor is very close to or actually invading these muscles [ 13,171.…”

“…Statements alluding to the ineffectiveness of this modality for this particular disease have been based on sporadic reports with one or two cases in their series receiving radiotherapy [ 1, 25,26,27] or were just unfounded opinions of the authors [3,5,23,28]. Stephenson et a1 [23] stated that radiotherapy is of no value in cystosarcoma phyllodes, although the one patient in their own series who received this treatment showed no recurrence after preoperative irradiation and segmental resection. Fox [26] also stated that radiotherapy offered little help for breast sarcoma even though the use of this modality was mentioned in only one of the 60 patients in his series.…”

“…Lee and Pack summarized the literature up to 1931 and found only 105 cases with an average age incidence of 44.6 years. In the Mayo clinic between 1904 and 1943 there were 13 reported cases (Stephenson et al, 1952), and the Columbia University Medical Center recorded I5 cases between 1911and 1940(Hill and Stout, 1942. These tumours have their highest incidence in the third and fourth decades (Stephenson et al, 1952).…”

“…Most acknowledge that "cystosarcoma' ' is an unfortunate name for this lesion because of the malignant connotation of the term. Consequently, more than 40 different names have been proposed for the disease (Adkins, 1966;Carpathios and Raftery, 1960;Stephenson et al;1952), many no doubt more suitable to the lesion. Yet, this has added confusion to the literature and makes complete reviews of the subject difficult, if not impossible.…”
