Cytoarchitecture of the Oculomotor Nuclear Complex and of the Trochlear Nucleus in the Marmoset (<i>Callithrix jacchu</i><i>s</i>)

Abstract: The cytoarchitecture of the coulomotor nuclear complex (ONC) and of the trochlear nucleus (TN) was studied in the encephalon of 10 adult marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). All the encephala were fixed with Bouin, embedded in paraffin and submitted to 20-µm serial sections in the transversal, frontal and horizontal directions. The following staining methods were employed: Nissl, Kluver-Barrera, and Pal-Weigert, modified by Erhart [1951]. Morphologically we delimited four cell columns in the ONC of the marmoset, na… Show more

“…It should also be pointed out that the marmoset monkey has (1) visual corticothalamic projections that are approximately equal in distribution and size to those reported for the squirrel monkey (Hollander, 1974;Spatz and Erdmann, 1974); (2) parameters of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) characteristic of nonhuman primates (Clarke, personal communication) and eye movements produced by electrical stimulation of frontal cortex that are comparable to those evoked in squirrel monkey frontal cortex (Blum et al, 1982); (3) eye-limb coordination consistent with a predominantly arboreal life, much as do other New World monkeys and macaques (Sussman and Kinzey, 1984), and (4) the morphology of cranial nerve nuclei 111, IV, and VI, and the subdivision of the oculomotor complex are remarkably similar to the macaques (Reis and Machado, 1981;Clarke et al, 1987). The present findings have been published in abstract form .…”

“…A-G Summary of mesendiencephalic areas (filled areas) receiving projections from the LTN and projecting to the inferior olive. These areas were estimated by a compilation technique involving all five anterograde cases and two retrograde HRP cases where the enzyme topographical organization of the oculomotor complex has been studied in marmoset (Reis and Machado, 1981;Clarke et al, 1987) and other primate species (see review by Evinger, 19881, but little is known about the dendritic morphology of oculomotor neurons in this species. Data from other species, however, show many dendrites from the neurons in this open field nucleus ascend into the overlying PAG (mouse: Ramon y Cajal, 1911;cat: Edwards and Henkel, 19781, thereby overlapping the terminal fields of AOS neurons (Giolli et al, 1984).…”

“…The EW can usually be distinguished from the sur rounding cells and from the AM by its larger and more darkly stained cells in Nissl-stained sections [Carpenter and Peter, 1970/71;Carpenter and Pierson, 1973;Akert et al, 1980;Reis and Machado, 1981]. However, the distinction between various nuclei in the oculomotor complex is clearly illustrated in the photomicrograph in figure 3D taken from an experiment in which spillage of HRP has occurred from the injection sites in both ciliary ganglia into the third nerves.…”

“…The marmoset monkey was chosen as the subject for this study because the morphology and anatomy of its oculomotor region have been described previously [Reis and Machado, 1981], and there was found to be little difference between this and other species of monkey.…”
