Cytochemical characterization of gill and hepatopancreatic cells of the crab Ucides cordatus (Crustacea, Brachyura) validated by cell metal transport

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) is a hypo-hyper-regulating mangrove crab possessing gills for respiratory and osmoregulatory processes, separated in anterior and posterior sections. They also have hepatopancreas, which is responsible for digestion and absorption of nutrients and detoxification of toxic metals. Each of these organs has specific cells that are important for in vitro studies in cell biology, ion and toxic metals transport. In order to study and characterize cells from gills and hepatop… Show more

“…This species is among the main mangrove species, whose ecological relevance is due to the cycling of nutrients resulting from its feeding process through the consumption of litter [29]. Due to this fact and importance, U. cordatus has been adopted as a biological model in conservation and impact studies on the mangrove ecosystem [30][31][32]. In this sense, this study sought to assess adverse effects of EE2-spiked polyethylene microparticles by evaluating phase 1 and 2 enzymes, the antioxidant defense system, and lipid peroxidation, DNA strand breaks, cholinesterase activity, and lysosomal membrane stability in two estuarine species (Crassostrea gasar [the mangrove oyster] and Ucides cordatus [the swamp ghost crab]) in order to better understand the impacts of this combination of pollutants on tropical coastal zones.…”

“…Estuarine crab gills are usually divided into the anterior gill, which is a typical gas exchange epithelium made up of thin cells, and the posterior gill, which is essential for the transport of ions . The hepatopancreas is characterized by 4 different cell types: embryonic cells, which originate the other cell types; resorptive and fibrillar cells, both important for absorption of nutrients; and blister cells, responsible for digestion and storage of nutrients . In addition, these organs exchange ions and metals with the environment through Ca channels, exchangers, and Zn channels .…”
