“…This contrasted with results observed in rats where daily supplementation with pyridoxine hydrochloride (500 µg, IP) for 2 days led to a significant reduction of NDMA-demethylase activity to normal levels (Aramphongphan et al, 1994). Regulation of CYP2E1 by the liver as well as by extra-hepatic organs (Powley and Carlson, 2000) is highly complex and can take place at the transcriptional, post-transcriptional, translational, or post-translational levels (Hukkanen, 2000). CYP2E1 can be induced by a variety of environmental toxicants including benzene (Gonzalez-Jesso et al, 2003).…”

“…DISCUSSION CYP2F1 is expressed primarily in lung tissues with little or no expression in hepatic or other extrahepatic tissues (3,13,43). The expression of CYP2F1 has been implicated in the tissue-specific toxicity associated with many pulmonary toxicants including styrene, 3-methylindole, naphthalene, and benzene (6,8,44). All of these compounds are environmental and occupational toxicants found in sources such as cigarette smoke, gasoline, and industrial by-products.…”

“…Little CYP2F1 mRNA expression was detected in other tissues (Carr et al, 2003). Studies using mammalian cells containing low levels of heterologously expressed CYP2F1 suggested that CYP2F1 is active toward several pulmonary toxicants, including naphthalene, styrene, 3-methylindole, and benzene (Nakajima et al, 1994;Lanza et al, 1999;Powley and Carlson, 2000); however, heterologous expression of CYP2F1 in nonmammalian systems yielded nonfunctional P450 proteins (e.g., Baldwin et al, 2005). Therefore, CYP2F1-transgenic mice would be useful for studying the function of CYP2F1 in chemically induced lung toxicity.…”
