“…In individuals occupationally exposed to formaldehyde, genetic eVects have been observed in buccal or nasal mucosal cells (Ballarin et al, 1992;Kitaeva et al, 1996;Suruda et al, 1993;Titenko-Holland et al, 1996;Ying et al, 1997) and in peripheral lymphocytes (Bauchinger and Schmid, 1985;Dobias et al, 1988Dobias et al, , 1989Kitaeva et al, 1996;Suskov and Sazonova, 1982;Yager et al, 1986). In other studies, genetic eVects of formaldehyde exposure were not observed in peripheral lymphocytes (Fleig et al, 1982;Thomson et al, 1984;Vasudeva and Anand, 1996;Zhitkovich et al, 1996).…”

“…Spear suggested that HCHO caused the significant increase of sister chromatid exchange (SCE) rates which he found in the students. Similarly, Suskov and Sazonova (1982) found significant increases in chromosomal aberrations in the peripheral lymphocytes of workers who were exposed to an average of 0.4 ppm of HCHO in a resin factory. We therefore think that Dr. Gibson's letter may understate HCHO's potential to affect macromolecules (by whatever mechanism) in bone marrow and elsewhere.…”
