Cytokeratin profiles of male breast cancers

Abstract: Male breast carcinomas have a basal-like phenotype that is similar in frequency to that of female breast carcinomas. The expression of CK5/6 and CK14 identifies a subset of pathologically aggressive male breast cancers.

“…MBC is similar to female breast cancer (FBC) in many ways, but there are also distinct differences [4][5][6]. The diseases are histologically similar, invasive ductal carcinoma being the most frequent form in both MBC and FBC, while lobular cancer is less common in men [5,7]. Furthermore, MBC tumors express estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors more frequently than do FBC tumors, while HER2 seems to be less frequently overexpressed/amplified [4,5,8].…”

“…Os dados a respeito dos perfis de expressão gênica são limitados. Recentemente, Ciocca et al 23 publicaram estudo descrevendo os perfis de citoqueratinas expressos no câncer de mama masculino em casos da América do Norte e da Europa. O painel de anticorpos utilizados foi CK 5/6, 14, 17, 18 e 19 associado ao receptor de estrogênio.…”

“…They had a higher histological grade and a larger size than tumors that were not of the basal subtype. The basal subtype should identify a subset of pathologically aggressive MBC, as in FBC [25]. …”
