Cytokines as adjuvants for avian vaccines

Abstract: SummaryThe worldwide trend towards a reduced reliance on in-feed antibiotics has increased the pressure to develop alternative strategies to manage infectious diseases in poultry. With this in mind, there is a great emphasis on vaccine use and the enhancement of existing vaccines to provide long-term protection. Currently existing adjuvants for poultry can have deleterious side-effects, such as inflammation, resulting in the down-grading of meat quality and a subsequent reduction in profits. Therefore, to enha… Show more

“…Cytokines are naturally derived proteins that play a crucial role in controlling the immune system, and are produced in response to infection (Asif et al, 2004). In avian coccidiosis, the cytokine IFN-γ has been found to be important in immunoregulation (Chapman, 2014;Dalloul and Lillehoj, 2006).…”

“…If a non-replicative vector for C. perfringens antigens were to be injected in ovo, it is possible that protective antibodies would already be in decline at the time the disease occurs. Furthermore, the choice of the adjuvant is important as some adjuvants are known for inducing embryotoxic side effects (Asif et al, 2004). According to our knowledge there are no studies reporting efficacy of in ovo vaccination against necrotic enteritis.…”

“…In addition, there is increasing consumer and governmental pressure to reduce or remove drugs from feed manufactured for food animals (Young and Craig, 2001). These factors have promoted the exploration of a variety of antimicrobial feed additives and immunotherapies such as vaccination and cytokine therapies for use as alternative control strategies (Barrow et al, 2003;Asif et al, 2004;Lowry et al, 2005;Doyle and Erickson, 2006). Specifically, vaccines (live, attenuated, and killed) developed against Salmonella spp.…”
