Cytologic identification of erythrophagocytic neoplasms in dogs

Abstract: Erythrophagia can be found in many tumor types. When erythrophagia is observed in spindle-cell sarcomas, osteosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma should be considered in addition to hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma.

“…In dogs, hemophagia has been reported to occur in individual cases of mast cell and plasma cell tumors, megakaryocytic leukemia, and hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma [ 1 ]. Therefore, cytologic differentiation of benign and malignant forms of HPS can be problematic.…”

“…The clinical presentation and the cytologic features raised the suspicion for hemangiosarcoma. While erythrophagocytosis has also been reported in canine histiocytic sarcomas, this tumor is rare in the horse and clinical features were not supportive of this diagnosis; this was therefore considered unlikely …”

“…Erythrophagocytosis has been described in several round cell and mesenchymal neoplasms in dogs, including multiple myeloma, acute megakaryoblastic leukemia, osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, histiocytic sarcoma, and particularly hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma . The cytologic and histologic appearance of the spindle cell population, the cellularity of the neoplastic cell population, and the presence of mucin were consistent with characteristic features of myxosarcoma.…”
