Cytomegalovirus gastritis

Abstract: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been increasingly recognized as an important common pathogen in an immunocompromised state. The colon and stomach are the most common sites of its gastrointestinal infection. Symptoms of CMV gastritis are usually nonspecific and include epigastric pain, fever, nausea and bleeding. Endoscopic features are quite variable and include macroscopically normal mucosa, diffuse erythema, nodules, pseudotumors, erosions and ulcers. The bioptic detection of intranuclear inclusions is the hallmar… Show more

“…Interestingly, three of eight patients with BP or pemphigus complicated with CMV disease between 2005 and 2014 have been reported from Japan and Taiwan. We, however, have no satisfactory explanation for why many of CMV disease in the setting of blistering diseases have been reported from Asian countries; one possible explanation could be that this may be related to the higher seroprevalence (76.6%) of CMV in a healthy Japanese population than the prevalence (45.8%) in a corresponding German population.…”

“…Although isolated case reports linking CMV with gastric inflammation have been reported, including in cases of documented co-infection with H. pylori [53][54][55], this was the first study to report such a relatively high frequency of both pathogens in gastritis and gastric cancer. Important limitations in this study were the small size of the studied population, a highly heterogeneous population (age range 4-89 years old), as well as the lack of a healthy control group and the fact that all pathogens were detected by PCR methods.…”
