Cytomegalovirus Immunoglobulin G Avidity Index among Blood Donors in Alexandria, Egypt

Abstract: SUMMARYBackground and Aim: Transfusion transmitted diseases (TTD) are a major challenge to transfusion services all over the world. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is considered one of the main viruses associated with blood transfusion. As CMV screening is not included in routine screening tests done for donated blood in blood banks in Egypt, the detection of CMV Immunoglobulin G (IgG) avidity needs to be tested for being a useful tool to diagnose recent infection among blood donors. The aim of this work was to study CM… Show more

“…In this study, high rates of CMV infections were reported in children receiving a blood transfusion, and the infection was positively correlated with increasing age and the duration of the thalassemia [55]. These high rates of CMV infections are attributed to the high CMV seroprevalence among blood donors in Egypt, as reported by Gawad et al In their study, 96.6% of blood donors (out of 88 tested blood samples) were CMV seropositive [56].…”

“…91 Moreover, 96.6 % of the subjects tested positive for HCMV-IgG in a study of voluntary blood donors from the Alexandria Regional Blood Transfusion Centre. 92 In addition, in a study of 130 patients that had breast swelling and either malignant or benign surgical excision, Surendran & Chisthi reported that HCMV-IgG antibodies were detected in all investigated patients. Therefore, they inferred that there was no correlation between HCMV-IgG seropositivity and breast cancer.…”
