Cytomegalovirus infection associated with ulcerative colitis in immunocompetent individuals

Abstract: SummaryGastrointestinal infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) is usually found in immunocompromised patients and rarely affects imnmunocompetent subjects. We describe two immunocompetent patients who had primary CMV infection, and in both the disease was associated with ulcerative colitis. Both patients recovered from the CMV infection spontaneously.

“…Rachima [38] reported two cases of CMV infection diagnosed by high titres of IgM antibodies to CMV (solid-phase enzyme immunoassay) but without histological detection on colonic biopsies. A high prevalence of CMV IgG antibody in patients with ulcerative colitis, compared to normal controls and to patients with active Crohn's disease, permits the hypothesis of a possible role for the virus to exacerbate the inflammatory disease and therefore its pathogenicity.…”

“…2 CMV infection has been described as a cause of relapse of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially in steroid-resistant cases. [3][4][5] CMV infection can have a severe clinical course 6 and may cause death if appropriate treatment is not given. Although there has been a gradually increasing number of case reports of CMV infection complicating IBD, there are few reports on its prevalence.…”
