“…We acknowledge certain limitations to our study. While we assessed CMV seropositivity and used anti-EBV IgG levels as a Herpesviridae family control, we did not investigate the contribution of other coinfections common among PLWH such as other herpesviruses (types 1, 2, and 8), hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Furthermore, although anti-CMV IgG levels are not a marker of CMV replication, we compared people who are seropositive for CMV with people who are seronegative [ 36 , 37 ]. The differences between these 2 groups as well as the associations with anti-CMV IgG but not anti-EBV IgG levels suggest that CMV coinfection is playing an active role in persistent epithelial gut damage in ART-treated PLWH.…”

“…The sensitivity (100%) of the Abbott RealTime CMV assay was higher than that of the Roche CAP/CTM CMV (91.3%) for the detection of CMV in clinical specimens. Other reports also showed that the Abbott RealTime CMV assay has good sensitivity, precision, and linearity when compared to the Roche Cobas Amplicor CMV assay (PCR-ELISA) and other in-house assays [ 24 , 25 ]. According to the manufacturers' instructions for the Abbott RealTime CMV and the Roche CAP/CTM CMV assays, the design of the calibrator and control (Abbott RealTime CMV assay with external control as calibrator and Roche CAP/CTM CMV assay with internal control as quantitation standard) may affect the performance of precision, sensitivity, and linearity in both systems.…”

“…In our primary hypothesis, we were expecting to detect a reduction in the rate of symptomatic patients, considering that the RT-PCR has high sensitivity to detect low viral load 15 , 16 . Moreover, antigenemia presents several limitations in CMV treatment, highlighted in the updated international consensus in 2013 as the lack of standardization, the dependence of the subjective interpretation, and its performance when the count of neutrophils is low 14 .…”
