Cytopathological features of villous adenoma of the urinary bladder in urine: A rare case report

Abstract: Villous adenoma of the urinary bladder is a rare tumor that histologically mimics its enteric counterpart. Patients with an isolated villous adenoma have an excellent prognosis, but associated adenocarcinomas can frequently be identified in them as well. There is no literature that discusses the cytopathologic features of villous adenoma. Here we report a case which was diagnosed as villous adenoma histologically, which has been followed up with urine cytology. In urine cytology, many mucin producing cells are… Show more

“…However, cytologic descriptions of cytomorphologic features of these variants remain less defined for daily practice. Several studies have evaluated cytology findings of histologic variants of UC, 5,8,9,11,12,14,18,19 but most studies focused on micropapillary subtype. Only a few cases mentioned other subtypes, such as sarcomatoid variant, squamous differentiation, and glandular differentiation.…”

“…Although histologic variants are relatively well‐recognized among pathologists in biopsy and resection specimens, the cytologic features of these variants in urinary specimens have received limited attention in the literature. Few case reports and studies detail the urinary cytomorphologic findings of histologic variants of UC 5‐14 . Given that urine cytology is the current gold standard for bladder cancer screening, early suspicion of aggressive UC variants on urine cytology can give guidance for clinicians to make better treatment decision for UC patients.…”

“…The identification of glandular morphology in urine sample is difficult and only a few anecdotal case reports are present exemplifying and documenting this issue. [31][32][33] Urine cytology of VA shows clusters of mucin-filled columnar cells. 33 The identification of both transitional epithelium with atypia and glandular epithelium should arouse suspicion of a UCVGD in urine cytology.…”

“…[31][32][33] Urine cytology of VA shows clusters of mucin-filled columnar cells. 33 The identification of both transitional epithelium with atypia and glandular epithelium should arouse suspicion of a UCVGD in urine cytology. However, the glandular lesions of urinary bladder are relatively uncommon and a suspicion/diagnosis in urine cytology is challenging.…”
