Cytopathology of chalazia

Abstract: Chalazion is a common inflammatory condition of the eyelid, usually treated on the basis of clinical diagnosis alone. Preoperative exclusion of malignancy in chalazia with atypical clinical presentation could prevent unwarranted surgery. This is a retrospective study of aspirates from 16 patients with chalazia having an atypical clinical presentation. Smears were stained with May-Grünwald Giemsa. Two broad patterns of granulomatous inflammation reflecting the spectrum of changes in the course of the disease we… Show more

“…It is a granulomatous reaction to the lipid secretions of meibomian or Zeis glands, and occurs after obstruction of the duct (Bajart, 1994). Cytologically, the granulomatous response may be of the mixed-cell or suppurating type (Dhaliwal et al, 2004). Conventionally, it is treated by incision and curettage of the contents (Duke-Elder, 1974; Wessels and Wessels, 1996) or by intralesional Accepted 10 February 2005. steroid injections (Ho and Lai, 2002;Kaimbo Wa Kaimbo and Nkidiaka, 2004;Khurana et al, 1988;Mustafa and Oriafage, 2001;Prasad and Gupta, 1992).…”

“…These features are helpful for differentiation of chalazia from IKC. 5 An epidermal inclusion cyst is a non-inflammatory, palpable nodule that is not fixed to the tarsus but is freely movable, which is another differentiating characteristic with regard to IKC. 6 The cyst content of a steatocystoma is a yellowish oily sebum containing hair shafts, and steatocystomas are not attached to the tarsus.…”

“…Chalazion is chronic inflammation of the meibomian gland (deep type) or zeisian sebaceous gland (superficial type) resulting in a clinically firm, painless nodule of the eyelid [1]. Histologically, extravasated lipid material produces a surrounding lipogranulomatous inflammation containing neutrophils, plasma cells, lymphocytes, histiocytes, and giant cells in a zonal configuration around central lipid material [1].…”
