Cytoplasmic and Combining Ability Effects on Agro-Morphological Characters in Intra and Inter Crosses of Pima and Upland Cottons (G.Hirsutum and G. Barbadense)

Abstract: Combining ability and heterosis were determined in a population obtained from the full diallel crossing of four different cotton genotypes (G. hirsutum and G. barbadense) for agro morphological traits and yield. High variation was observed for characteristics among parents and the F1 combinations. So, selection could be done for improved yield, yield components and agro morphological traits. Barbadense 5539 and Termeze14 (G. barbadense) had positive GCA for height, bolls/plant and sympodia branch/plant, Invers… Show more

“…x G. barbadense L.), both additive (Zangi 2010) and non-additive gene action (Tausif 2008) for seed cotton yield were found significant. Dhamayanthi (2011) reported that heterosis values were positive for seed cotton yield, whereas were mostly negative for ginning turn-out and fiber characteristics.…”

“…Complete diallel designs have frequently been used to determine the mode of gene action for agronomic traits in cotton. Using this approach, significant reciprocal effects have been detected for fiber length, fiber strength, fiber elongation and fiber fineness and lint percentage (Shaukat et al, 2013), monopodia branch length (Zangi et al, 2010), days to first flowering, seeds, locule -1 and lint percentage (Khan et al, 2011).…”
