Cytoprotective Effects of Natural Highly Bio-Available Vegetable Derivatives on Human-Derived Retinal Cells

Abstract: Retinal pigment epithelial cells are crucial for retina maintenance, making their cytoprotection an excellent way to prevent or slow down retinal degeneration. In addition, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, neovascularization, and/or autophagy are key pathways involved in degenerative mechanisms. Therefore, here we studied the effects of curcumin, lutein, and/or resveratrol on human retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19). Cells were incubated with individual or combined agent(s) before induction o… Show more

“…Instead, only a few studies focused on the effects of lutein/ zeaxanthin on cell-clearing systems. Indeed, lutein, through autophagy induction, protects human RPE cells from cell death induced by either chronic oxidative stress, staurosporine, or LED light exposure [ 57 ]. This is also correlated with a reduction in basal-VEGF release [ 57 ].…”

“…Indeed, lutein, through autophagy induction, protects human RPE cells from cell death induced by either chronic oxidative stress, staurosporine, or LED light exposure [ 57 ]. This is also correlated with a reduction in basal-VEGF release [ 57 ]. Again, lutein, through induction of autophagy, mitigates the cytotoxic effects of vital dyes indocyanine green (ICG) and brilliant blue G in human RPE cells [ 196 ].…”

“…Along this line, LUT exhibited a protective role in human retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19 cells) exposed to different stimuli implicated in agerelated macular degeneration pathogenesis (AMD), a severe disease that causes vision loss. The mechanisms underlying these actions were associated with an inhibition of apoptosis, VEGF levels, and oxidative stress markers, as well as prevention of autophagy flux alteration [151]. Similarly, a LUT nanoemulsion improved penetration into ARPE-19 cells and protected cells from H 2 O 2 -induced damage [152].…”

“…Munia et al evaluated the effects of resveratrol, lutein and curcumin on human retinal epithelial cells, demonstrating that these cells, after an oxidative stress insult, were protected from death by a pre-treatment with these nutraceutical compounds. 47 …”
