Cytoreductive surgery with liver‐involved renal cell carcinoma

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the benefits of cytoreductive surgery for renal cell carcinomas that also involve the liver. Between 1994 and 1997, four patients with renal cell carcinoma with liver involvement were surgically treated with nephrectomy and hepatectomy. Two of them underwent a simultaneous hepatectomy and nephrectomy (group 1), and the remaining two patients underwent a hepatectomy after a nephrectomy and had a diagnosis of postoperative recurrence (group 2). “…Although relatively few patients present with a metastatic disease pattern that is amenable to a curative surgical approach, we and others have previously identified subsets of patients who achieve long‐term survival following hepatic resection. A review of the literature identifies 15 reports describing surgical treatment of hepatic metastases from renal cancer published from 1978 to 2005 (Table I) 1–15 . Combined, these series provide survival data following hepatic resections for renal cancer metastases in 64 patients.…”

“…Kazugoshi et al 6 presentan 2 pacientes que tras nefrectomía y extirpación de segmentos VI y VII hepáticos se encuentran libres de enfermedad a 100 y 57 meses tras la cirugía. Otro estudio realizado en 4 pacientes presenta supervivencia global a 1 y 3 años tras la cirugía del 66% y 33% respectivamente 15,21,22 .…”
